The Professional Postgraduate in Health Care Management (GDHCM) is aimed at decision makers in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors. The programme provides relevant management training and a well respected postgraduate qualification to those seeking more senior posts in primary and secondary health care.
The programme combines the study of health services management and general management. It also allows health professionals to obtain the necessary skills to manage health care services in rapidly changing and increasingly business-like environments.
The GDHCM is a self-contained course. It is a fulltime course and is completed over a time span of fifteen months. It has two components – taught units with a total of eight (8) subjects covered over a period of twelve months and a dissertation lasting for the remaining three months. The subjects taught have been very carefully chosen with a deliberate focus on Health Care Management.
Furthermore, it is to be reckoned that management is an inter-disciplinary affair and the subjects taught must never be treated as compartmentalized. There is a great need that the students develop the capability as to how to integrate the subjects taught in the classrooms to solve any Health and Social Care management problem. The three months long dissertation part of the GDHCM takes care of this. Students research real life managerial problems relating to health and social care from selected organisations in the Health sector and submit reports containing recommendations for the individual organizations. This is an area of crucial importance for health and social care management students. The dissertation part of GDHCM has been found to be a major source of value addition to the overall effectiveness of this programme.
  Programme Objectives :
The GDHCM is designed to provide students with the business management skills required to succeed in today’s complex health care industry
This course aims to recruit health and social care practitioners seeking to advance their practice, and has been designed to meet the needs of students working in a range of roles and service environments.
The programme will equip graduates with the knowledge and skills required to operate at senior levels in today’s health and social care services. A flexible, student-centred approach to teaching and learning will facilitate the development of analytical and critical thinking and the ability to lead and manage change.
Emphasis is also placed on the interrelationship of health services management problems and tasks. The main philosophy of the programme is that health services management can be taught as a unified body of knowledge, applicable to any health service organisation.
Students enrolled in the program study industry relevant topics to include health care infrastructure, hospital operation, finance, and health care management. This programme is open to both experienced and newly registered health care practitioners.
